Tris Speaker in Peterborough

An ad in Friday’s Examiner touted the following day’s contest “the Greatest Baseball Game Ever Played in Peterborough,” pitting “American Stars vs. Wellington Semi-Pro. Team of Toronto,” to be played at Riverside Park, “Peterboro.” Also in that day’s edition: several pages of World Series coverage, including a photo of the Giants’ Frankie Frisch getting caught stealing second, and another of Ruth, mid-swing, looking classically Ruthian.

September 12 at The Red Garnet, Peterborough

I’ll be reading at The Red Garnet in my adopted town of Peterborough on September 12, along with Andrew F. Sullivan (author of the collection All We Want is Everything, pictured above), Spencer Gordon (Cosmo), and Emma Healey (Begin with the End in Mind). I’d be awfully happy if folks in and around Peterborough came out.

Andrew and Spencer both write fantastic stories that you should read, and Emma is a poet (two Irving Laytons!) who reels of lines like “When we kissed (if we kissed) it made sounds like the CBC and we tasted like press release,” so even if you don’t come as a personal favour to me, come to see and hear those three read from their work. There will be books for sale, too.
